Lethal

Lethal (Stu Chapman)
Lethal (Stu Chapman)

Born & raised in Camden, North London, Stu got into Oldskool Hardcore back in 1991 when one of his best mates Alex got him listening to tapes by the likes of legends Ratpack, Ellis Dee, DJ Hype, Slipmatt, Seduction, Ratty etc whilst playing Streetfighter 2 & Mario Kart! Soon after that he bought turntables which he and Alex together learnt to mix on.

Fast forward to 2003 and Stu went travelling around Australia. Disillusioned with music in general he’d all but stopped DJing but still had the desire to write new music. It was a meeting with MC Nino (of The Housecrew & Baby D – Production House Records fame) after he got back to the UK from traveling in Australia which inspired Stu to actually sit down and start writing music.

Originally, Stu just wanted to make music in the vein of the Old Skool Hardcore which he had lived and breathed for so long, but had just gotten bored of hearing the same songs over and over. He then met up with a certain Neil Spicer (DJ Nee) and from there they went on a four year mission of writing a lot of tunes together and DJing across Europe. What began as nothing more than a hobby for Stu & Nee became part of a rapidly growing Oldskool revival, and in turn that revival soon evolved into its own brand of electronic music. It became known as “Hardcore Breaks”.

It all started off as a recreation of music written in the early 90’s, but as their understanding of production increased, so did the quality of their music. Once they had finished four tracks between them, they set up “Enormous Mouse Records” and they released the now much sought after EM001.

From there, they went on to release a total of eight vinyl releases on Enormous Mouse. In that time they also wrote tracks for a lot of the other labels that popped up around the same time that EM did. Stu also did quite a lot of DJing during the period where Hardcore Breaks was very popular, and he played across Europe, lots in the UK, as well as in New Zealand.

Whilst writing various “Hardcore Breaks” releases, Stu also wrote some tracks under the alias artist name of Lethal Formula for the label Hardcore Projektz which is run by Simon Dark (A.K.A Darkus). When Stu made the decision to set up a new label with friend Jonathan Levine (A.K.A Kranky), he decided that recording under the alias was the way to go, as he considered it to be a fresh start having taken about a year’s break from music production whilst traveling in Australasia.

The new label was to be called Anomaly Digital – focusing solely on digital releases, and the newly emerging sound of “J-Tek”. Stu decided to cut down the Lethal Formula alias to just Lethal as it made sense when recording with Kranky – “Kranky & Lethal” has a certain ring to it!
